"After my mother died I was hurt when people would talk about any subject except her death and how it was affecting me."

How old do I have to be to call?
Old enough to make a telephone call and young enough to be called youth.

Do I have to tell you my name?
No - but you can if you want to. Your counsellor will have a name too.

Can I call you if my pet dies?
Yes - pets are very important - so are mums and dads and brothers and sisters and grandmothers and grandads and friends and teachers.

Will you tell my parents that I called?
No - we won't tell anyone outside Cruse UNLESS we feel you are in any danger - if we have to tell someone, we will tell you first.

Will I have to pay for the call?
Yes - the call will be charged at a lo-call rate, but it isn't free. Do check that it's OK to use the phone and remember - who you call is recorded on telephone bills and calls from mobile phones can be a lot more expensive than other phones.

Who will answer my call?
A trained bereavement counsellor - that's someone who knows a lot about the feelings and thoughts and problems that affect people when someone dies.

How can you help me?
It all depends on what kind of help you're looking for!

  • we can listen to you
  • we can help you understand what makes you feel the way you do
  • we can suggest things to do which might help you
  • we can put you in touch with someone you could go and see
  • we can help you sort out what would be most helpful

It can help to talk with someone outside the family because:

  • the people you most want to turn to may also be upset and you don't like troubling them
  • you may have lost the person you would normally have talked to

What is bereavement?

  • we use the word bereavement when someone very close to us dies
  • all the feelings, thoughts and actions that follow a bereavement are called grief
  • grieving is natural
  • there isn't a right way to grieve - everybody grieves differently
  • when we are grieving it can help to talk about feelings - hopes, fears, sadness, anger, etc - thoughts - questions, memories, uncertainties - problems with friends or family, at school, college, work or home
  • there isn't a time limit on grief - we can grieve for losses that happened some time ago
Is Cruse a religious organisation? No. Cruse is open to people of all faiths and none.
